Welcome to the Queensland Diesel Restoration Group.

The Queensland Diesel Restoration Group is a privately funded volunteer group dedicated to the history and restoration of ex Queensland Railway diesel locomotives. . .

. . . and we're currently looking for volunteers to help!

Working bees are generally held on the first Saturday of every month at QPSR's yard, 1 Patrick Street, Swanbank starting at 8.30a.m. Water, food, PPE such as steel capped boots, a high vis shirt, safety glasses, ear protection and a hat are essential. Most tools will be supplied but any extra tools may be asked of you if required and we will let you know what may be required in advance.

Facebook ButtonThe best way to keep up to date and informed with what is happening at QDRG, is to join our Facebook Group. Simply click on the 'Facebook' button to take you there.

Our current projects, are the restoration of ex QR locos, English Electric loco 1225 and Clyde 1700 Class loco 1707D so, if you are interested in helping, particularly with the 1225 project, please contact Greg via the 'contact' link for further info!

DEL 1225 and 1202 at QR Redbank in 1985 (Photo Greg Adams) About 1225

Current Status:
1225 is currently under restoration at QPSR's Swanbank Depot.

About:
Built by QR's Redbank workshops and completed in January, 1985, 1225 is a 'one off' loco, rebuilt from 1200 class loco 1208 with parts from 1250 class locos, 1252 and 1253. As part of the rebuild, the loco was also changed from a car body to a hood unit. As with all 1200 and 1250 class locos, 1225 has a Co-Co axle configuration but its powerplant is the more powerful 1145 kW (1535 HP) EE 12SVT (4 stroke) engine that was found in the 1250 Class locos. 1225 spent most of its working life based at Willowburn (Toowoomba) hauling mainly freight to and from Brisbane and down as far south as Wallangarra but only a couple of years after its birth 1225 was withdrawn from service in November 1987 and was left to quietly deteriorate at QR's Redbank Workshops.

DEL 1707 in original blue livery (Photo Michael Wilson) About 1707D

Current Status:
1707D is currently under restoration at QPSR's Swanbank Depot.

About:
1707D is the sole survivor of QR's 1700 class Clyde locos (1700 to 1711) built by Comeng Rocklea, Queensland. The 1700 class filled QR's need for a light branch line locomotive, more specifically for the western lines, with them spending most of their working lives around Toowoomba, Roma and places west working light freight trains. Introduced from 1963, the hard working and robust little locos had a Co-Co axle configuration, weighed 59 tonnes and were powered by an EMD 8-567 CR (2 stroke) engine developing 652kw (875hp). 1707D itself began revenue service on the 11th November 1963 and was withdrawn from service in January 2001.

Please note that due to circumstances beyond our control, there will be no working bee in June but there WILL be one the first Saturday in July (7th July 2012). Please contact Greg for further info via the contact link if you are interested in helping. We hope to be doing a significant amount of work on 1225s engine.

September's working bee was spent repairing the doors on our QLX wagon that's used for the storage of parts and doing repair work. Rust caused the door runners to swell jamming them so the doors didn't open properly. At least now we can open the doors a reasonable width for easy access. Click here to see the repair work that was required.

The first working bee for 2011 took place on Saturday 26th February. The cab of 1225 has been cleaned up of larger debris but still needs a vacuum cleaner through it. The resident 8-legged wildlife were exterminated with a thorough spraying from cab to hood. The turbos and exhaust manifold was also drained of water. (Info courtesy of Dean Stalker).

The Friday, 3rd December move went pretty much according to plan and 1225 now lives at Swanbank! Check out images and videos of the move via the photo gallery and video links.

The track had settled over the previous few weeks so a few touch ups were made a few Saturdays ago with more Ash and Coalstone going under the sleepers to keep 1225 on the tracks at QPSR. 1707D has also had a pressure clean pending eventual prep work for painting. (Info courtesy of Dean Stalker).

22-May-2010

Over the past few months volunteers have been working hard to prepare the track at QPSR where 1225 will stand during its restoration progress. Many thanks go to the volunteers for their hard work!
